Sodium trihydrate refers to sodium salt containing three molecules of crystal water. Here, we usually refer to sodium carbonate trihydrate (Na2CO3·3H2O), also known as trona or light caustic soda.
Chemical formula: Na2CO3·3H2O
Common names: trona, light caustic soda
The appearance is white crystal, usually colorless and transparent or with a light yellow color. It can be extracted from natural minerals or prepared by the reaction of anhydrous sodium carbonate and water.
Classification can be divided into two types: one is alkaline salt. Sodium carbonate trihydrate is an alkaline salt, which is moderately alkaline. The other is hydrate: because it contains three molecules of crystal water, it is a hydrate.
Its characteristics: easily soluble in water, the solution is alkaline. After dissolving, it generates alkaline ions, which have a neutralizing effect on acids. Sodium carbonate trihydrate has certain hygroscopicity and can easily absorb moisture in the air.
Trona can be extracted from ores, the most famous of which is trona ore (trona stone), also known as soda ash ore. It is often used as an alkaline substance in industrial production, such as glass manufacturing, fertilizer production, etc. It is also used as a cleaning agent in the home, such as cleaning kitchen utensils, decontamination, etc.
