In addition, the hydration of c3s is accelerated in the presence of calcium formate. It found that the second heat flow maximum in isothermal calorimetry of a class g oilwell cement and an opc-fly ash mix was significantly advanced by calcium formate. Determined no further increase in the degree of hydration after 24 h at calcium formate dosages > 2 wt%, they concluded that any additional calcium formate did not further contribute to an acceleration of c3s hydration. The occurrence of an optimum calcium formate dosage beyond which the hydration of the analyzed class g oilwell cement, was not further accelerated and in some cases even retarded was confirmed, who found, that while 1.7 wt% calcium formate appeared to be the optimum dosage for the acceleration of c3s hydration, >5.7 wt% calcium formate was needed to reach the maximum acceleration of c4af hydration.

 

Further, it reported that at replacement levels of cement with fly-ash exceeding 40 wt%, the accelerating capacity of calcium formate was significantly reduced. In early hydration, the amount of calcium formate in solution is reduced. Hypothesized that calcium formate accelerates the hydration by adsorbing onto the c3s surface and that any calcium formate added after the adsorption was completed could not further contribute to the acceleration of c3s hydration. Proposed that the formate ion, while competing with ca2+ ions to absorb on the c3s surface, might push ca2+ ions from the c3s surface, leading to the formation of an easy-to-rupture protective layer that might facilitate who used significantly lower calcium formate dosages between 0.25 and 0.75 wt%, proposed a similar mechanism by claiming that the high diffusivity of hcoo– ions through hydrate layers covering c3s particles might be responsible for the acceleratory capacity of calcium formate on cement hydration.

 

However, as recent theories on opc hydration claim that the rupture of a protective layer around c3s particles might not be the process responsible for the onset of fast c3s hydration, further research is required regarding the mechanism by which formate ions contribute to accelerated cement hydration.

 

Calcium formate at a dosage of 0.75 % of cement weight was reported to decrease the initial and final setting time of an opc paste by approximately 30 %. Furthermore, it accelerates the development of compressive strength in opc pastes and mortars, in cements that use fly ash as scm, and in cao-activated fly ash systems.

 

A 90 % increase of 28 d compressive strength compared to the reference sample was reported at a calcium formate dosage of 0.75 % of cement weight. However, it showed that the relation between calcium formate dosage and compressive strength development is complex, as calcium formate reduced the compressive strength in their experiments at specific dosages, who analyzed the compressive strength development of three cements with c3a contents between 3 and 14 wt%, reported that the capacity of calcium formate to accelerate c3s hydration decreases with increasing c3a content.
